Connection Settings

The Connection tab of the Preferences window allows you to tell CaseDetective how to connect to your FogBugz database and what your FogBugz user details are. If you can not directly connect to your FogBugz database you can not use CaseDetective.

To set up the connection to your FogBugz database, first pick the correct type of connection from the pop-up menu, then fill in the required and optional settings as appropriate. The fields labeled in bold on the Connection tab of the Preferences window are required, and may change depending on the type of database connection you select.

There are four supported connection types in the Windows version of CaseDetective; MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL, and ODBC (DSN).

There are two supported connection types in the Mac OS X version of CaseDetective; MySQL and ODBC (DSN).

MS SQL Server

If your FogBugz installation uses a Microsoft SQL Server database, then you can use the "MS SQL Server" connection type.

Parallels Desktop003Parallels Desktop004

Please enter your connection details in the edit fields as follows:

Server: Enter the hostname or IP address of the server where your database server resides.

Database: Please enter your FogBugz database name here (usually fogbugz).

Use trusted Connection:
If your database server has been setup with Windows Authentication, and your user given access to the FogBugz database, then you can select this option. With this option selected the User Name and Password fields can be left blank and will be disabled.

User Name (Optional): If your database server requires that you enter a User Name to connect to the database, please enter it here.

Password (Optional): If your database server requires that you enter a Password to connect to the database, please enter it here.

MS Access

If your FogBugz installation uses a Microsoft Access database, then you can use the "MS Access" connection type.

Parallels Desktop002

Please enter your connection details in the edit fields as follows:

File Name: Type in the full path to your Access database file, or browse for the file using the "Browse..." button. The Access database file will need to be either on your local machine or shared on the network somewhere that you have access to.

MySQL

If your FogBugz installation uses a MySQL database, then you can use the "MySQL" connection type.

Parallels Desktop001

Please enter your connection details in the edit fields as follows:

Host: Enter the hostname or IP address of the server where your database server resides.

Port: Enter the network port that should be used to connect to the database server (usually 3306).

DB Name: Please enter your FogBugz database name here (usually fogbugz).

User Name (Optional): If your database server requires that you enter a User Name to connect to the database, please enter it here.

Password (Optional): If your database server requires that you enter a Password to connect to the database, please enter it here.

ODBC (DSN)

To use the "ODBC (DSN)" connection type, simply create and test an ODBC connection in the "Data Sources (ODBC)" application in Windows, or "ODBC Administrator" in Mac OS X.

The Data Source Name (DSN) that you set there will be used in CaseDetective.

Parallels Desktop005

Please enter your connection details in the edit fields as follows:

DSN: Enter the Data Source Name (DSN) you gave to your ODBC connection.

Database (Optional): If your ODBC connection does not have a default database set, please enter your FogBugz database name here (usually fogbugz).

User Name (Optional): If your ODBC connection requires that you enter a User Name, please enter it here. If your database uses "Integrated Windows Authentication" then you probably will not need to enter a User Name.

Password (Optional): If your ODBC connection requires that you enter a Password, please enter it here. If your database uses "Integrated Windows Authentication" then you probably will not need to enter a Password.

You might find that even though your ODBC connection was set up with user name and password, that if you don't enter it in the connection settings that you'll still be asked to enter them again when refreshing data. This seems to be down to "trust" relationships between your computer and the server. The easiest way to get over this is to simply add your ODBC user name and password settings again in the CaseDetective connection settings above.
